Lensa AI

How qualitative research helps make a timely pivot and take a product to the next level.
In 2019, Prisma Labs commissioned research for their product Lensa. The app was originally designed as a tool for editing selfies: the neural network removed blemishes and wrinkles while evening out skin tone. However, it soon became clear that the product’s potential was much broader, and that it could be significantly improved and expanded.

Conducted customer development

Description
  • I conducted customer development interviews, and it became clear that while users found this functionality useful, it lacked the “wow effect.”

  • It was decided to make a pivot. The app introduced the Magic Avatars feature, which generated hundreds of stylized avatars based on 10–20 user photos

Result
  • For the first time, the internet was flooded with AI avatars that people were willing to pay for.

  • At its peak, the app generated over $1 million in daily revenue.
